Biofouling services from SRSL build on a strong and supporting research background in marine bacteria, biofilms, plankton ecology and seawater quality. This in-depth understanding allows us to offer consultancy services, bespoke monitoring, contract research and scientific assessments of marine fouling.

SRSL help reduce the impacts of marine biofouling and facilitate development of antifouling approaches and technologies.

 

Biofouling Studies

Review of marine growth on flexible riser systems, Shell Ltd (UK), 2010-11

Marine ecologists at SRSL possesses in-depth and extensive knowledge of the marine environment in Scotland, coupled with a clear understanding of the kind of marine biofouling that affects artificial structures in our waters (such as vessels, offshore renewable energy devices, marinas, ports and aquaculture installations). We offer cutting-edge knowledge in the science of community composition, as well as the physical environment that facilitates the propagation and spread of non-native species.

Since 2010, SRSL have been commissioned by Shell UK to carry out a number of marine desktop and laboratory studies, focusing on marine biofouling affecting operations at the Schiehallion oilfield, West Shetland.

This scope of work included:

  • Faunal identification
  • Literature review/desktop study of settlement and density characteristics
  • Marine growth assessments
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
  • Video analysis
  • Technical reporting

Shell (UK) Ltd gave SRSL a 5/5 service rating for the quality of final reporting, ease of communication and overall level of service provided.
